Week 29

Here are some highlights from the first week back after Spring Break...

This week in math we really focused on working through multistep story problems. The first step is figuring out what the problem is asking you to solve. The students used lots of different strategies to show their mathematical thinking (tally marks, pictures, number sentences, number lines, etc.) We also had our math check-in this week and it is incredible how focused all of the first graders were and how hard they all worked. I am really impressed with all of the different strategies they are applying and using to represent their work!

We are finishing up our persuasive letters and the first graders went through the entire writing process in order to complete them. First they brainstormed things they wanted to change, next they filled out a graphic organizer to help them with the structure of their letter and finally they wrote the letter independently! Hopefully they are convincing :)

When we learned about Cesar Chavez we learned that there are only 8 states that celebrate his birthday, and Oregon is not one of them. On Thursday, March 31st we celebrated his birthday by reading his biography outside in our Stephenson garden!

Week 27

Here are some highlights from the week...

In honor of Dental health month in February, we had Dr. Castle (Brandon's dad) come visit Room 112. He showed us some of the tools that he gets to use and the first grade dentists got to fill fake cavities! A HUGE thank you to Dr. Castle and hopefully the first graders are brushing and flossing so there aren't any real cavities!

In writing, we have written thank you letters, friendly letters and we are moving onto persuasive letters. The first graders brainstormed different things they want to get, or to change - and we had some long lists! The kiddos are looking forward to writing their persuasive letters..and hoping they work :)

Week 26

Here are some highlights from the week...

We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with Read Across America Day on Wednesday. The first graders and their fourth grade buddies all celebrated by working together on different "Seuss-tivities." All of the K-2 students lined the hallway at the end of the day and read. It was great to see all of the readers fill the halls of the school!

This week we learned about Cesar Chavez and added him to our biography journals! The first graders are continuing to make insightful connections and ask deep questions to get to know these important people better.

Reminders:

3/8 -- Dough For Dollars @ Pizzacato
